FAQ & Help

Quick answers to common questions

Do my friends need to install anything?

No. SkySplit runs in the browser. They open the invite link or scan your QR code and they’re in. They can add it to their home screen for an app-like experience, but it’s optional.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Everything is stored on your device first, so you can add expenses on a plane or abroad without data. Changes sync automatically when you’re back online and signed in.

Do I need an account?

Not to use it on one device. Sign in (free) when you want your trips backed up and synced across devices, or when joining a trip with friends so everyone sees the same data.

How do I create, join, or switch between trips?

Tap the trip name at the top of the Trip tab to open the trip switcher: pick any of your existing trips, tap "New trip" to start one, or "Join a trip" to enter someone else’s invite code.

How do I invite friends, and what does "pending" mean?

Share the trip’s code or QR code (top of the Trip tab) for anyone to join instantly, or, if you’re signed in, invite someone by email from Trip settings. Someone invited by email shows up right away as a pending member, they’re included in new expense splits by default, but haven’t actually joined yet. You can remove a pending invite at any time before they do.

How do I add an expense?

Tap the + in the bottom bar for the full manual form, amount, currency, category, who paid, and how it’s split. The other two entry methods below hand you the same form, already filled in, so you can always review or adjust before saving.

Can I add an expense just by typing or saying it?

Yes. Type something like "taxi to airport 40" in the Add expense box, or tap the mic and say it, and AI fills in the amount, category, and who it’s split with, ready for you to check before it saves. This needs a signed-in account and your one-time permission for AI use, which you can revoke any time in the You tab.

How does receipt scanning work?

Tap the scan icon next to Add expense, take a photo of a receipt or pick one from your library, and AI reads the total, date, and category into the same review form quick-add uses. The photo stays attached to the expense either way, even if AI can’t read it. Same account and AI-permission requirements as quick-add.

Can I scan a whole pile of receipts at once?

Yes, with SkySplit Pro. Tap the scan icon, then "Scan the whole pile", and pick up to 10 photos at once. AI reads every receipt, even two in one photo, and lists them on one screen so you can check amounts and who paid before adding them all in one tap. Close it halfway and you can keep the batch for later and finish it from the dashboard.

How does currency conversion work?

Each trip has a base currency. When you add an expense in another currency, it’s converted at the current rate and snapshotted, so past expenses never change value later. Rates refresh automatically in the background, at most twice a day, since the source itself only publishes new ones once a day, plenty for splitting a bill with friends. Offline, SkySplit uses the last rates it downloaded to your device. There’s also a standalone converter (the ⇄ icon on the dashboard) for quick price checks while shopping.

Can I change a trip’s currency after creating it?

Only before the trip has any expenses. Once the first one is added, the trip’s base currency locks in Trip settings, since changing it afterward would throw off every amount already converted against it. Start a new trip if you need a different base currency later.

What is “Just track” mode?

A group where nobody owes anybody. Perfect for a family trip paid from one pot, or for tracking your own spending. Everyone logs expenses into a shared list, you get the same insights, and you can set a budget to see how much is left. No balances, no settle-up.

Can I set a trip budget?

Yes, in “Just track” groups. Add it when creating the group or later in trip settings. The dashboard shows a progress bar that turns amber near the limit and red if you go over.

Can I track private purchases on a shared trip?

Yes. When adding an expense, open Split and turn on “Just for me”. It’s visible only to you, never touches the group’s balances, and shows up in your own insights.

I forgot to log something yesterday, can I backdate it?

Yes. When adding an expense, open Details and tap the date (when editing, it’s under the amount), then pick the day it actually happened. The list groups expenses by day, so it lands in the right spot.

How does "Settle" decide who pays whom?

It computes each person’s fair share, then finds the minimum number of transfers that squares everyone up, usually far fewer payments than paying each other back per expense.

Can I undo a settlement?

Yes. From the Settle tab, tap a payment you already marked as paid to undo it, it goes back to unpaid and the balance it affected is restored.

Can I split unevenly?

Yes. Besides equal splits, you can set exact amounts, shares (e.g. 2:1), or percentages per person, and choose who participates in each expense.

Can two people share costs as one line?

Yes. Pair them from Trip settings (the link icon next to a member). A paired couple or household then counts as a single line in balances and settle-up, while still splitting normally between themselves. Unpair any time to go back to separate lines, without affecting past expenses.

Who can edit or delete an expense?

Only the person who paid it, but anyone in the trip can comment on any expense (“this included the tip”). Deleted expenses are kept as strikethrough entries so the history stays honest, and deletion can be undone.

Can I move an expense to another trip?

Yes. Tap the expense, then "Move to another trip", and pick the trip it belongs in. The payer and everyone it was split with come along, and the amount is reconverted into that trip’s currency.

How do I export my trip?

From Trip settings or the Insights tab, export as CSV (every expense as a spreadsheet row) or PDF (a shareable summary with charts and balances). Neither includes photos directly, expenses that have one are flagged instead, and you can download those photos individually from within the app.

Is my data private?

Trips are only visible to their members. Data lives on your device and, when signed in, in your synced account. See the Privacy policy for details.
