Splitwise daily limit: what it is and what to do
Splitwise’s free plan only lets you add a few expenses a day. That’s fine for rent, and a real problem on a trip. Here’s what the limit is and the options you have.
What is the Splitwise daily limit?
Since 2023, free Splitwise accounts can add a limited number of expenses each day. Once you hit it, you wait until the next day or upgrade to Pro. Splitwise doesn’t publish the exact number; reviews and user reports put it at roughly 3 to 5 expenses a day.
Why it hits hardest on trips
A normal day on a group trip easily looks like this:
- Breakfast and coffee
- Train or taxi
- Museum or activity tickets
- Lunch
- Groceries for the apartment
- Dinner, then drinks
That’s 6 or 7 expenses before anyone books tomorrow’s tour. With a daily cap, the rest wait, and expenses that wait get forgotten.
Your options
- Wait until tomorrow. Free, but you need to remember every amount and who paid. Keep a note on your phone in the meantime.
- Bundle expenses. Log “Day 2 food” as one expense. It saves entries, but you lose the detail, and it breaks down as soon as someone skipped a meal.
- Pay for Splitwise Pro. From $4.99 a month. Worth it if you also use Splitwise for shared bills at home.
- Use an app without a daily limit. SkySplit is free with no daily cap and no ads, and converts every currency into one balance. Tricount is free too.
Splitting a trip with no limit
SkySplit is built for group trips: friends join from a link or QR code without installing anything, you can add expenses offline, and at the end it shows the fewest payments to settle everyone up. See the full SkySplit vs Splitwise comparison.
